Scaling & Curettage in Tirana | KissDent
At KissDent, we perform professional dental scaling and curettage to treat gum disease, remove hardened deposits from below the gumline, and stop the progression of periodontitis before it causes permanent damage to the bone and tissue supporting your teeth.

Scaling & Curettage: Treating Gum Disease at the Source
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide. It is also one of the most undertreated conditions in dentistry, largely because its early stages are painless and easy to ignore. By the time most patients notice something is wrong, the disease has already been progressing for months or years.
At KissDent in Tirana, our periodontic team treats gum disease at every stage, from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis. Scaling and curettage is the cornerstone of that treatment. It is a non-surgical procedure that removes the bacterial deposits driving the disease and creates the clean environment the gum tissue needs to heal and reattach to the tooth surface.
For patients coming from abroad, periodontic treatment at KissDent combines clinical standards that match Western Europe with costs that make comprehensive gum care genuinely accessible.

Signs You May Need Scaling and Curettage
Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are not normal. Neither is persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing.
Other signs that periodontic treatment may be needed include gums that look red, swollen, or have pulled away from the tooth surface, teeth that feel sensitive near the gumline, and any sense that your teeth feel looser than they used to.
Not all of these symptoms are present in every case. Some patients with significant periodontal disease have very few symptoms. This is why regular dental examinations that include a periodontal assessment are important, not just a check of the teeth themselves.

How Scaling and Curettage Is Performed at KissDent
Treatment begins with a full periodontal assessment including digital X-rays and pocket depth measurements. This gives us a complete picture of which areas are affected, how severely, and what treatment is required.
Scaling and curettage is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel discomfort during the procedure. The mouth is typically divided into quadrants and treated over one or more appointments depending on the extent of the disease. Each quadrant takes approximately one hour.
Our periodontic team uses both hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers to remove deposits from the root surface thoroughly and efficiently. The ultrasonic scaler uses high frequency vibration and water irrigation to break up and flush away calculus and bacteria, including from areas that hand instruments alone cannot easily reach.
Following treatment, we provide detailed guidance on home care, including the correct brushing and flossing technique, and any additional tools such as interdental brushes or antiseptic mouthwash that will support healing. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to assess the tissue response and determine whether any further treatment is needed.
What Happens After Treatment
The gum tissue begins to heal within days of treatment. Most patients notice a reduction in bleeding and inflammation relatively quickly. Over the following weeks, as the tissue heals and reattaches to the cleaned root surface, pocket depths typically reduce.
A reassessment appointment is scheduled six to eight weeks after treatment. At this appointment we remeasure pocket depths, assess tissue health, and determine the next step. For many patients, scaling and curettage combined with improved home care is sufficient to stabilise the disease.
For others with more advanced periodontitis, further treatment may be needed including surgical intervention in cases where pockets remain too deep for non-surgical treatment to reach adequately.
We are transparent about prognosis from the start. If a tooth has lost so much supporting bone that it cannot be saved, we tell you clearly rather than proceeding with treatment that will not change the outcome.

Periodontic Maintenance After Treatment
Gum disease does not have a cure in the way that a cavity does. Once you have had periodontitis, you are at higher risk of recurrence and require more frequent professional maintenance than a patient who has never had the disease. Most treated periodontic patients benefit from a professional cleaning and assessment every three to four months rather than the standard six monthly interval.
At KissDent we build a personalised maintenance schedule for every periodontic patient based on their disease history, their home care compliance, and their clinical response to treatment.
Maintenance appointments are shorter than the initial treatment sessions and focused on keeping the disease stable rather than retreating it from scratch.
Trusted by patients from all over the world, KissDent is committed to making every journey to a smile as comfortable, clear, and worthwhile as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Performed under local anaesthesia so you will not feel pain during treatment. Some sensitivity in the days after is normal and settles quickly with standard pain relief.
One to four appointments depending on how many areas are affected and how severely. We give you a clear treatment plan at your initial assessment before you begin.
A standard digital X-ray produces a two-dimensional image. This is appropriate for many common diagnostic purposes including decay detection, root assessment, and general oral health monitoring. A 3D scan produces a volumetric image that shows depth, allowing us to evaluate bone density and volume, sinus anatomy, nerve position, and other three-dimensional structures. We use 3D scanning for implant planning, bone grafting assessment, and complex surgical cases.
Inflamed tissue heals significantly after treatment. However, bone loss that has already occurred does not regenerate on its own. The goal is to stop the disease progressing and maintain stability long term.
